Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can cause additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Often times however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade gear due to their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They improve the stats of the Item Upgrade - Yogicentral.Science - that they're connected to. Armor upgrades are found in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged using a specialist or higher salvage kits to retrieve upgrade components from items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it will take on. A piece of armor upgraded to its highest upgrade level will increase its ability to absorb damage. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it should be heavier.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades that are that are available in the game and they all have distinct effects. Certain upgrades give armor an extra amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item can receive will be identified by the name of the upgrade, as illustrated in the table below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a combination of technology and magic, as indicated by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Certain upgrades require charges in order to be used. These are indicated as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges for these upgrades are updated daily or never expire, dependent on the upgrade.

The cheapest method of upgrading armor is by using Iron Ore, which can be gathered by exploring the area and looting chests of minor loot. Titanium is more expensive, but it can be obtained through smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide significant improvement in stats and are a worthwhile investment, especially for 1-handed weapons.

The process of upgrading an armor piece to its maximum upgrade level will greatly increase its defense capabilities, but the player should be aware that putting on weight can drastically decrease its speed and agility. This is why it is not recommended to upgrade armor pieces that are higher than +9 because the increase in defense is generally not worth the extra weight and power costs of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to improve the effectiveness of specific aspects of a weapon. Upgrades can improve the accuracy of a rifle or the damage caused by shotgun shells. Certain weapons come with special upgrades to improve their inherent capabilities. Frictionless materials (improves stability, and reduces weapon overheating) and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's speed for greater damage) are two examples.

Most weapon upgrades require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade. These can be obtained by doing side quests, or taking out a certain number of bosses or monsters, or from the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.

Upgrading a Weapon, Equipment Set piece or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade items fee that is based on a specific number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the higher the number of bars you will need to complete the upgrade. The cost of the upgrades will be lower if have more than one of the relevant upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and sets has changed. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5, you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a certain amount of Bars. You could do this until your weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level, at which point the upgrades would reset.

This is still possible, but it relies heavily on RNG. Instead, you're much better off visiting stores and buying equipment that has low upgrade levels but good base scores and stat distributions. These will have a chance at gaining you the most prestigious benefits and blessings.

Most players will want to make the most of upgrades to weapons they use most frequently to help them level up faster. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their teammates use to make them stronger. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R to increase its utility when accompanied by experts in biotics like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to improve a stat or provide secondary effects in armor and weapons. They can be made through the process of jewelry crafting, in which you combine a gemstone and various chemicals at a table. The higher the level of the jewel the better the secondary effect. These reagents can be found around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and, sometimes, by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also buy them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The quality of a diamond can be improved by the Jeweler in stages that vary from Crude to Royal. Based on the level of the gem it will give different stat boost when slotted into weapons, equipment and jewelry.

All kinds of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a sufficient level to be able to get them. Jewels can be substituted with another jewel without damaging the original. You are able to replace the jewel only once in a piece of equipment.

Utilizing more jewels in a move can make it feel more comfortable and is usually done to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. Jewels also enhance performance and make an outer layer that is more durable than metal so that repeated friction from pivots do not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the look of your weapons and shields. These are a small perk and can be swapped freely, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs, like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler to exchange gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs are also removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits or aegis can't be exchanged and can only be recovered through an upgrade extractor or salvaging with a Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that offer an array of tiny but valuable advantages to your hero. They are available in the starting area as loot or as personal story rewards. They can also be obtained from vendors as well as through completing road interaction. They may also be crafted by jewelers, and found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player unlocks will be the cloak. It grants a small, but valuable boost to speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player can then collect necklaces, amulets, and rings in a similar manner as they did with weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has an upgrade slot which can be universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be utilized on any equipment. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced and are only compatible with certain trinkets.

These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This enables the hero to perform better when they are not active and also helps make up for a lack of a solid team or the absence of any slots from the talent tree which would normally be filled with the hero's Best item upgrade stats.

As a general rule trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best item upgrader in Slot) items that you will not replace anytime soon. Next, any items with desirable statistics that are less significant than the iLevel of the item upgrader kit that is to be upgraded. This is especially true if you're looking to upgrade several stats on an item. It is better to upgrade one important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

At the beginning of the game, junglers will usually want to upgrade their trinket to a red, while top and mid players typically choose either a pink or green ward (depending on the matchup). These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's ability to control his map.

Apart from the items mentioned above, players can also find a number of other trinkets in the game in the form of trophies and awards. They can be obtained by completing certain milestones in the story. For instance, completing the main quest for a chapter or defeating a boss. These can be viewed by selecting the appropriate achievement from the reward tab of the hero menu.
