1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test as there are different connector pins, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.
Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is failing and requires replacement. The good thing is that they are very cheap and easily accessible, especially when you're looking at a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is a good option.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues in your car. It is an important part of the transmission of your audi car keys since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the car's engine is spinning. When this sensor fails, it can affect the performance of the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.
The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points. This part is common across the audi q3 key 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find them in wrecking yards.
