Door Handle Replacement

Window-Repairs.-150x150.jpgIt's worth replacing door handles if you aren't happy with the way they look, or if they're difficult to use. With a bit of patience, you can put in the new handle in no time.

Most modern door handles have cover plates that hide the screws to give them a beautiful appearance. However, you'll need to attach them separately if the new handle doesn't have them attached already.

Removal of the old Handle

The door handle isn't only a decoration for your home it also serves as an element of security that allows you to lock and unlock your door. But, over time, your door handle may lose its grip, become loose, or appear old and worn. This is a sign that it's probably time for a replacement.

One of the first signs that your door handle needs replacing is the fact that it is becoming difficult to operate. This is a problem because it means that you can no longer lock or unlock your door, which could pose a security risk for you and your family.

Another reason to replace the door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is risky, particularly for elderly or children members who might struggle to open it. They could become trapped. It's easy to fix a damaged handle on a door.

Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and will fit any door. If you're not sure if your new door handle will work, try removing the old one and measuring its housing holes. This will let you purchase the right size door handle.

The easiest way to take off the door handle you have been using is to take it off of the door. This is usually done using the screw driver. Some aluminium door handle handles have an enclosure plate that hides the mounting screws. You will need to remove it to get to the screws. Once you have removed the old handle, take a note of how the spindle is attached to ensure that you can align it when you fit your new one.

Alternately, you can take off the door handle by uncrewing it from the latch mechanism. This is usually done with an screwdriver however you'll need to find the small latch, which should be just to the left of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, take off the handle and strike plate. Then remove the latch from the edge of the door.

Remove the Strike Plate

You'll need to replace your latch plate after replacing the handle. It's the part that holds the hole through which the door's latch hooks in when the door is closed. The new handles will have two latch plates which are a circular and a rectangular plate (see the above diagram that shows the parts of the door handle). If your current latch plate is rectangular in shape, swap it over to the circular one so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle easier to operate.

The first step is to unscrew the screw that's holding the latch plate that was previously in place. The screws can be very tight, and may require some force to loosen. It may be helpful to get a second person to assist with this task if you can.

The latch plate should be removed from the door after the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or won't move use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now, you can proceed to making the new door strike plate to be installed. Install the latch plate in the doorjamb using the wood screws that were included with the new handles. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this can cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in its proper position, shut and open the door to check whether it latches and closes properly. If it doesn't, you'll need to adjust the strike plate up or down, or even forward or back until the door shuts and latches correctly.

If the door continues to move or jiggles, then you may need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear hinges that aren't shallow, the incorrect size of the latch or damaged strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, but using the use of a metal file instead an hammer and chisel.

Take off the Latch

The latch is the angled piece of metal that is able to move in and out of the hole that runs along the inside edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also hooks into an opening in the door's frame so that the door remains closed. If your door wiggles when you close it, replacing the latch might be the only thing needed to fix it.

It's difficult to identify the screws that hold the latch to the door, but there's usually a small slot on the trim plate that allows you to insert a screwdriver and remove it. After removing the trim plate, you should be able to take off the latch and the bolts that hold it and the spindle.

If the latch isn't easily removed using a paperclip or tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the slot for the latch that is recessed and then gently twist or jiggle until the that the latch and handle are beginning to split. It may take this several times before the latch comes loose enough to pull out.

After the old latch has been removed it should be possible to move the new latch into the slot without problems. Make sure the latch is positioned correctly in the slot and is aligned with the screw chambers and then use your new screws to attach it to the strike plate and door frame.

Take note of the backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole in the door's front and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle is equal to the measurement.

You'll require a brand new cylinder for your lock if you're replacing the latch and handle or your existing one is damaged. If you're not replacing the locks, however, a new latch should fit in your existing recess, and work just fine with the keys you have currently. Select a latch with rectangular cover plates to match your old handles for doors.

Then remove the Cover Plate

To replace the door handle inside, remove the cover plate (or rose) that covers the screws and inner mechanism. Look for an opening tab on the plate, and make use of a flathead screwdriver to pop it off the knob. It may have an opening on one edge or be secured by pins.

Once the cover plate is removed take off the screw that holds the interior handle in place, and then set it aside. You'll also need to take out the screws that hold the latch and the plates inside, which you can do by loosening them using a Philips screwdriver. Then, take the inner plates and latch plate from the door and set them aside.

Some doors don't have this gap. If yours isn't, you will need to make a hole through the door. The procedure for this is similar to the procedure for opening a door with locks, but you'll have to be extra careful not to harm the frame or door.

The installation of new door knob screws is necessary after the holes have been made.
