What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Modern car keys have unique chips that are specific to each vehicle, in contrast to older keys. This keeps thieves from taking the key and then turning on the car.

The keys are usually purchased from a dealership or cloned by a locksmith. The procedure for programming the key varies by manufacturer and involves turning the key to the on position without starting the engine, and then taking it off it within a predetermined time period.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder gets interrogated, it sends an encoded signal with the four-digit code. This signal, called a SQUAWK Code is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit a specific message to air traffic control in the event of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changing weather conditions. Each aircraft has a transponder, which responds to radar probes by displaying an identifier code. This enables ATC to locate an aircraft that is surrounded by screens. Transponders can be found in various modes that vary how they respond to interrogation. Mode A transmits only the code and mode C provides data on altitude.
