iRobot Models

Robots such as the Roomba that are fitted with powerful hardware and sensors can collect a large amount of data. But their privacy policies often cover the possibility that humans could be watching this data.

A policy for the vacuum and mop combo Combo J9+, for instance it states that human eyes are watching images of rug or other obstacles. These images aid in improving the device's obstacle avoidance techniques.

Roomba i3 EVO

The i3 is the best robot for flooring that is not bare, as it is excellent in picking up small pieces of debris. It also does a good job with pet hair, but it has a difficult time picking up large clumps of hair on carpeting. Its only major drawback is the high recurring cost.

The Roomba i3 EVO is comparable to the i1 but comes with one major upgrade: imprint smart mapping. This technology allows the robot to remember specific rooms of your home and clean them more efficiently. You can label rooms using the i3 EVO buttons or set virtual boundaries using the irobot App to stop the robot from cleaning spaces you don't wish to. The i3 EVO also has one of the largest dustbins among the robots we tested, at 0.5 liters.

The i3 EVO, like the majority of robots, requires regular maintenance to function properly. iRobot suggests cleaning its brushes at least once a week -- or every two weeks in the case of pets. Flip the robot over and press the green button to release the brushes. Take the brushes out and then wipe them clean with a microfiber cloth. Also, you should clean the six sensors spanning the bottom of the robot.

Another thing to keep in mind when buying a new Roomba is that the manufacturer's filters and brushes must be replaced regularly. The Product Health tab of the irobot App lets you examine the condition of these components. The filters on the i3 EVO should be replaced every two months and the brushes every six to 12 months.

iRobot's patented Dirt Detect Technology uses sensors to detect dirtier areas and increase suction power in those areas. This feature is especially helpful in homes that have a lot of furniture as it helps the robot avoid getting stuck under objects and ensures that all surfaces are clean. The i3 EVO also works with Alexa and allows you to control it via voice commands. It does not have the same features to avoid obstacles like other models like the i8+, j7+, and s9+.

Roomba 694

The Roomba 694 robot vacuum is a fantastic entry-level robot. It's small enough to fit under most furniture, and is extremely thorough when it comes to cleaning. It works well on bare flooring and can pick up pet hair well (though not as effectively as higher-end models). It has limited automation options and is not compatible with Alexa or Google Assistant.

The 694 is powered with a user-replaceable Li-ion battery. It takes around two hours for the battery to charge completely while the bot is docked at Home Base. After charging, it is able to resume where it left off during its last cleaning session, or begin with a fresh one. It is equipped with an RCON and infrared sensor to keep it from stepping on the stairs.

This Roomba is available in red, white, or black. Its ninja-like shaped round shape is accentuated by matte black plastic around the sides and an irobot roomba vacuum mop logo on the top. The middle of the robot is an enormous button that reads "Clean" written in green text. Home and spot cleaning buttons are set around it. A light on the top of the button shows status and battery levels: a green outline means it has enough power, whereas a red one indicates it's at a low level or on the charger.

The roomba irobot 694 doesn't come with a self-emptying feature like some of the more expensive models, but it is a great performer of emptying its internal bin every time it comes back home. The bin is able to hold approximately 60 days of trash. It's easy to empty it manually. Simply press the release button, slide it out, and then dump it in the garbage.

The irobot roomba combo App is required to use the 694. It allows you to alter cleaning schedules and track the history of previous cleaning sessions. You can also set up virtual boundary markers for the robot to stay clear of specific areas of your home and plan cleanings in advance. The app can even suggest extra cleanings during pollen season or when you know your pets shed lots of sheds.

Roomba 980

The 980 is one of the latest robots from iRobot. like the rest, it's mostly controlled by an official app on iPhone or Android which connects it to your home's WiFi. This means that regardless of where you are -- down the block or across town thousand miles away you can tell the 980 to start up a cleaning session.

You can also do cool things with the app such as scheduling multiple cleaning sessions per day and adjust settings, such as what surfaces to be focused on during the time of a particular session. You can also program the cleaner to return to its charging station once it's full which will make the 980 particularly useful if you regularly leave it to clean before heading out to work.

The 980, as with other Roomba models in the past, uses sensors to navigate your home. The iAdapt 2.0 navigational system tracks your home as you go, recognizing distinct characteristics and generating maps based on images that help the robot navigate more efficiently. This lets the 980 skip spots that it has already cleaned, and it's much more adept at bumping into furniture and other obstacles.

The 980 is also equipped with a range of sophisticated cleaning sensors. The two multi-surface brushes are specifically designed to remove large debris and dirt, while the smart Power Boost feature increases the vacuuming power when the robot is cleaning carpets. The robot can be controlled through the remote control, or via voice commands, thanks to integration with Google Assistant.

The 980 isn’t cheap, but it's well worth the investment since it does a fantastic job at picking up dust and other debris. Its latest battery technology will last for longer in cleaning sessions than prior versions, and the app makes it simple to schedule a specific time to run a session. The only thing wrong with the 980 is that it doesn't come with a spare battery. If yours dies it will be necessary to order one online.

Roomba 960

iRobot 960 is the current flagship model and is a great option for those who want an efficient robot vacuum that comes with lots of intelligent features. The robot can be activated by pressing a button by using the app, or using voice commands like Alexa and Google Assistant. It can be scheduled to clean a certain time.

The 960 works well on carpeted and bare floors. Its iAdapt sensors adapt to the floor's surface and its dual rubber brushes work together to pick up pet hair and not get tangled. It also comes with a bin detector that alerts users when the bin is about to become full. It makes use of the iRobot Home App to control the robot, and set up cleaning schedules.

Its navigation is excellent and it is able to navigate a single-story, large home with both bare and carpeted floors. In our tests it was able locate its way back to the docking station after completing the cleaning process. Its ability to map and detect dirt are impressive, as it can be able to remember the pattern of a particular area or even locate dirt on the floor. It can also get under and around various obstacles, such as table legs and seat seats.

The 960's drawback is that it doesn't come with the carpet boost technology that is available in the 980. Its cleaning performance is also a little below the standards set by other models in this category. But, it does provide good cleaning for most homes and is a good value for the money.

Like all robot vacuums, the 960 will need replacement parts for maintenance at times. The iRobot app keeps track of the frequency at which you need to replace the dust bin, filter, and the spinning brush. It is possible to pay around $35 per year for these replacements.
