Lexus Key Replacement - Replacing a Remote Or Fob

The battery in your key fob will eventually go out, regardless of whether you have the standard Lexus Key that turns the ignition on or an intelligent one for your vehicle that can start by pressing a button. It is simple to replace it with the help of a paperclip. Simply remove the old battery, replace it with the new battery (refer to the owner's manual to determine the type of battery you need) and then clip it back into place.

Keys

There are two or three screws on the back of the fob for the key. Unscrew them and store them safely (they are small and easy to lose). Remove the fob to reveal an indentation that is circular for the metal key, pop the battery out (using the paperclip) and replace it with the new one, making sure that it's pointing the right way up. Clip the inside of the metal key back together.

Remotes

Lexus remotes and fobs aren't easy to replace and require locksmiths who are well-versed and have the proper tools. Some models require that the transponder chip within the key be reprogrammed to function with the car's immobiliser system. The chips are programmed with different methods, based on the model of Lexus. This is done using a specific device that transmits a specific code to the chip to unlock the doors or to start the engine.

Some Lexus vehicles are equipped with a unit that combines the key head and remote. They are much easier to replace, since there is no separate chip needed. This type of key can also be a little cheaper.

All fobs eventually lose battery power, regardless of the type of key. It can be very frustrating, but with a bit of knowledge you can get your Lexus up and running. A transponder is a chip that has Non-Volatile Memory. It has a set windings, which are very fine wires coiled around the tube. They look like the ones in an electric motor. These windings generate a signal for the car to read. If the code is correct the car will begin to move.

There are two kinds of transponder chips. One known as the 80 bit, and the other known as a circle + (General Motors). The first type is reusable, but must be removed using a special machine to function in a different vehicle that is compatible. The second kind is more difficult to use due to the fact that the old ones can be broken, drilled, or toss out when keycases are changed. They can be salvaged, however and used with an ad-hoc key that doesn't require a battery in order to operate.

Immobiliser Systems

Immobiliser systems are electronic security devices that stop thieves from starting your car. It works by sending a signal from your car to the key lexus when you attempt to start it. The electronic chip inside the key responds by sending a unique number of codes that must match the one of the vehicle to allow it to start. If the codes do not match, your engine will shut off immediately to stop theft.

Modern smart keys and fobs contain an embedded transponder that can store electronic security information in a format which cannot be easily copied.
